<image:title>Community Lots - La Pedregosa - La Pedregosa Farmers Cooperative</image:title>
<image:caption>Afro-Colombians settled among indigenous peoples in a remote part of Cajibio, Cauca, in the middle of the 20th century. They were hired by multinational companies to establish pine tree farms and to work in sugar cane plantations. For years, the settlers trekked over the mountains and across the La Pedregosa River to buy foodstuffs, fertilizers, tools, and livestock. As a result, the settlers established a general store, saving them the hours-long trips through the mountains. The store gradually became a meeting place for the community, leading to the founding of La Pedregosa Farmers Cooperative (ASOCAMP), named after the river that runs through it, that today exports specialty coffee all over the world. However, its success today has not come without overcoming great adversity. In 2007, ASOCAMP re-launched the association focusing on accessing specialty coffee markets, after several of its founding members died as illegal groups vied for control of drug routes. Cosecha Traders proudly supports ASOCAMP, a farmers association that stands by its community, despite facing adversity. This unique coffee comprises 5 Afro-Colombian farmers who are committed to telling their communities' stories through coffee. Producers: La Pedregosa Farmers Cooperative (ASOCAMP) Shade Trees: Guamo and plantain trees Altitude: 1,500 - 1,600 MASL Varietal: Colombia Fermentation Time: 12 - 14 hours Drying: 8 days</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Lots - ASORCAFÉ - ASORCAFÉ Smallholders Lot</image:title>
<image:caption>One can only imagine what went through the minds of the first group of ASORCAFE farmers when they landed in Asia more than 12 years ago. The thoughts of their lush coffee farms fresh on their minds must have contrasted dramatically with the new sights, smells, and sounds. In their suitcases, they packed samples of green bean coffee with the same hands that grew and processed them. The producers had set out on their own, determined to show the coffee world who they are. And so they flew into the vast universe of specialty coffee motivated by the notion that they could be paid more fairly for the high quality of their coffee. Unbeknownst to them, they would later attract buyers from all over the world to their remote mountain town, and in the process, sway illicit crop production with the one their ancestors taught them to nurture and protect. The story of the ASORCAFÉ producers' association is one defined by faith, tradition, and fearlessness. It is telling of the tenacious character of the farmers in Inzá, and evidence that specialty coffee is a powerful vehicle to promote change. <image:title>Community Lots - Comedulce - Comedulce</image:title>
<image:caption>As weary travelers trekked through the mountains from neighboring hamlets, making their way to Popayán, the capital of the Cauca department, they stopped for respite in a small community where they bought much-needed locally made candy. Made from natural sugar cane, travelers feasted on the candy wrapped in banana leaves to recharge before they continued. As time went on, the candy's popularity grew, as did the community's, so much that it was named Comedulce (or candy-eater). A predominantly Afro-Colombian community, farmers also double as artisanal gold miners, another tradition inherited from their ancestors. The roads are a labyrinth of unpaved, narrow, winding trails that rise to the sky and descend abruptly like a roller coaster. Historic disenfranchisement, lack of services like water and electricity, and remote difficult-to-navigate roads have made the community an island of coffee among a sea of illicit crops. Staunchly devout, the farmers have stayed true to coffee and avoided becoming involved in the drug trade. Since its founding, Cosecha Traders has worked with several farmers in Comedulce despite the pandemic, social protests, and armed conflict to help them import their coffee to the USA, gain access to competitive specialty markets, and to develop this nascent origin. We dream of connecting as many farmers in Comedulce as possible and making it a destination for coffee professionals as it was for travelers before the community had a name. The store gradually became a meeting place for the community, leading to the founding of La Pedregosa Farmers Cooperative (ASOCAMP), a producers' organization that today exports specialty coffee all over the world. <image:caption>Many years ago, the town of Argelia, Cauca, gained national recognition for its thriving wax industry. Businesses boomed, families prospered, and nature flourished during this period before wax prices fell precipitously. Farmers turned to other crops like coffee and sugar cane to mitigate the impact of a changing world. However, Argelia inevitably fell behind in terms of development, and it has mutated in recent years into the epicenter of the illegal drug trade. For this reason, it is important to roast, brew, and drink every last drop of this coffee. For the leaders of the Farmers Association in Argelia (ASOPROA),“Coffee is life.” It is a crop which allows them to rebuild the social fabric of their communities and a harbinger of better things to come. It is also a means to protect the region's biodiversity, countering the toxic chemicals injected into the soil and water sources through illicit drug production. “Coffee is life,” as ASOPROA explains, is all-encompassing, yet so hard to achieve. The leaders of ASOPROA have fought heroically to offer coffee farmers opportunities for licit livelihoods despite threats, violence, and hardship. The stern faith in their work is inspiring as they compete against the multi-billion dollar illicit drug trade. It is an honor for Cosecha Traders to share ASOPROA’s coffee and story with partner roasters. <image:caption>Esperanza de las Flores comprises coffee from three women's groups living under different realities working to foster peace through specialty coffee in their communities. While many communities thrive after the signing of a peace agreement, others continue to endure the effects of an unrelenting armed conflict. Nonetheless, this coffee represents the power women have to inspire those who continue to struggle for a brighter future. In Timbío, where weapons have gone silent, women regularly attend training sessions on producing specialty coffee. They organize and mobilize their families around building their coffee enterprises and communicate with each other regularly. In contrast, women in El Tambo, a town suffering the effects illicit crop production has on society, have been relegated to a secondary role in their community. “In this community, it isn't easy for the men to accept that we can be independent”, says a woman farmer. Although they are becoming so by producing specialty coffee, much more needs to be done for them and their families to have a fair opportunity. For this reason, Esperanza de las Flores deserves one name to represent all: Esperanza, meaning hope for a peaceful future, and Flores represents each woman farmer that builds peace by example, love, intellect, and coffee. <image:caption>High above the mountains of La Argentina (Huila), nestled in verdant and water-soaked mountains, is a tightly-knit coffee-farming community run mainly by women. As occurs in many towns across Colombia, the men and youth leave home for the city in search of job opportunities, leaving women to care for the children, elderly parents and the farm. This community lot honors three women and families who have overcome so much to produce specialty coffee today. For years the townspeople of La Argentina were caught in the crossfire of the armed conflict and now face a new threat in climate change. Heavy rains falling relentlessly on the steep clay-rich soil have created massive mudslides, cutting communities off for months, destroying coffee crops, and risking farmers’ livelihoods. The farmers have undergone painstaking work on the farms to salvage what was left and to replant trees to mitigate future landslides on the steep slopes of Carmen de la Argentina. The farmers produced the coffee by innovating traditional processing methods. They picked each bean by hand to select the best coffee cherries. Then the cherries were fermented for 12 hours before they were de-pulped. The mucilage was then fermented for 48 hours and dried slowly for 28 days. The process developed an elegant and refined profile found in the mountains where it was grown. <image:caption>Martha Lucia began producing coffee when she was a child in Cauca, like the generations of their family before her. As a certified Q-Grader, she applies 22 years of experience to producing her coffee. In 1997, she became more interested in specialty coffee because she saw that other farmers found specialty buyers who exported their coffee. She sought training with organizations in her region, focusing on washed coffee processing. Although in great abundance, water scarcity is an issue for farmers in her community, given that each household draws from the same water source during the harvest. Martha Lucia researched African drying methods and learned about natural processing to avoid water scarcity during the harvest, receiving higher pay for better quality. “People thought I was crazy to process natural coffee because no one would buy it,” says Martha Lucia. After all, the market there was small for that kind of coffee. Her coffee is a product of years of trial and error while staying abreast with tendencies in the market. During the drying phase, the coffee is packed into GrainPro bags for 2 - 10 days, depending on weather conditions. This “interruption in the drying process develops more body and sweetness, resulting in notes of wine and raisins. Don Efraín's parents earned a living as migrant workers, picking coffee in Southern Colombia and eventually saving enough money to settle in Cauca, where he lives today alongside his soulmate, Carmen Julia. Recent years have been especially challenging for Don Efraín and Carmen Julia due to several health issues that have affected him, thus placing more responsibilities on her shoulders. Regardless, she has remained by his side, caring for him and the coffee trees on their land on which they raised their children. Although it is not evident that Don Efraín and Carmen Julia know that they have accomplished something so meaningful, for us, it is the love they have for one another that made it happen. "We didn't think our coffee would be so good," they said. Without a doubt, love is the reason why this coffee is so special. It is not necessarily the farm’s altitude, the fermentation time, or the processing method, but it is simple old-fashioned love. It is an honor for Cosecha Traders to offer Don Efraín and Carmen Julia’s beautiful coffee to partner roasters, made available in the USA for the first time. Inspired by her in-laws and her husband, she began her life as a coffee farmer five years ago, shifting focus two years ago to specialty when she began to experiment with fermentation processes. She chose coffee because it offers her family many sources of income, making it her family's best way to improve their livelihood. In the beginning, Aracely was very fearful and did not take many risks with the new processes, as she thought that she could waste what she had harvested, while her husband experimented with large quantities of coffee. After trying different methods and learning together, both have been able to form a great team, as she says that during the coffee process it is very important to listen to different points of view. For her, coffee has given them the opportunity to have a more united family. She dreams of continuing to grow coffee and that this will allow her to buy her own house. When she was 25 years old, she decided to return to her home to reconnect with the countryside. Her father gifted her a small plot of land to begin her new life. It was a drastic change for Ofelia, but one of great value as the countryside allowed her to have fun, spend time with her family, and grow as a person, opposite to the monotony she had been living in the city. She has been living on her farm with her family for 15 years, where her cousin motivated her to improve her processes, and to walk down the path of specialty coffee. With the help of her husband, who had more experience, they have been implementing what they have learned for the last four years, with the desire to continue improving. Today, they have converted their home into their workplace, a small and well-organized farm, which they want to improve continuously, as they aspire to have a pit for organic fertilizers very soon. For Ofelia, coffee is everything. She is very strict in her methods, prioritizing quality at all times. She plans to continue cultivating specialty coffee, expand her varieties, and teach her children to love coffee. Their journey has led them to this beautiful natural-processed coffee which includes Gesha, Pacamara, and Maragogype. It was produced using a temperature shock method and interrupted drying to amplify the sugars and accentuate the body. His goal is to make the farm self-sustainable. <image:caption>Alexander comes from a coffee-farming family who was introduced to the crop by his grandfather. Both his parents were teachers and instilled in him from an early age that the only way to find progress in life is to leave the countryside. When the time came Alexander attended university and completed his studies as an industrial engineer. Later, he would find out that he preferred life in the countryside. Tired of the city, and working odd jobs, he returned to the countryside with the certainty that there he would find a good life. Little by little, he realized that he was not going to do it alone, and he began to work with a group of farmers to form a producer’s association where he learned about the market and the world of specialty coffee. As a farmer, Alex quickly found that local buyers paid little for his coffee, but he continued on nonetheless. He sought training and innovated in his processes, improving his coffee and adding value thus increasing his profit. Today, his coffee has been at fairs, contests, and auctions. For him, the coffee growing process means much more than a new beginning, as his family has grown closer. His dream is to become a great reference in his community despite the political instability and illicit crop production in Cauca. As a smallholder farmer, he wants to demonstrate that you can make a living with dignity from coffee growing in hopes of other farmers to follow in his footsteps. When she was a child, she helped her parents pick coffee cherries after school. A few years ago, she began to save money to process her first crop, and today she has seen her hard work come to fruition. Isabel dreams of life ahead in specialty coffee. In addition to starting her process as a coffee farmer, she is currently completing studies in business management at a nearby university and works with her sister, who buys and sells specialty coffee. Isabel holds her sister in high regard as she has taught her family everything they know about specialty coffee, including her. As a young woman, Isabel has demonstrated character and leadership in a male-oriented trade. Despite this, she and her sister have earned respect in their community and Western Huila. Isabel plans to continue growing as a coffee farmer, improving her quality every day, and receiving more training. She is an example for more coffee farmers in her community that determination and passion complement familial traditions. <image:title>Microlots - Olmedo - Olmedo Cebay Olmedo comes from a long line of coffee farmers who have grown coffee for generations in the mountains of Eastern Cauca and Western Huila. When he was 14, he began working with his parents and brothers, picking and de-pulping coffee cherries by hand. “I farm coffee because it is the best crop in my region,” says Olmedo. It is the main crop farmed in the microclimates of Western Huila, which has demonstrated the capacity to produce specialty coffee. For smallholder farmers, like Olmedo, it is almost as if by inertia that they take the path into specialty coffee guided by tradition, family, and economics. Olmedo recalls how the coffee boer attacked the crops a few years ago and how farmers' livelihoods were affected. Prices suddenly dropped, making it challenging to make improvements to his farm. Although he has gradually recovered over time, he is determined to experiment with natural and honey-processed coffee. “I want to focus on quality because my trees can deliver quality,” says Olmedo. He has plans to install an eco-friendly de-pulping machine, renovate fermentation tanks, and build another drying station that will allow higher output. Cosecha Traders looks forward to delivering sustained support to a farmer as committed as Olmedo.</image:title>

<image:caption>Last year, we were pleased to offer a stellar coffee from Carlos Perdomo, a young renaissance man in the world of coffee. At 18, Carlos impressed us with his work ethic, discipline, organization, and maturity. Carlos told us, “My parents taught me to work early on, so I make something of myself.” For this reason, it was no surprise for us to learn that he had ventured to the Netherlands to study English and was trapped when the pandemic hit, preventing him from returning to his family’s farm in time for the harvest. “Coffee represents my family’s life, my great-grandparents’ lives. It is what has given us everything,” he told us. Luckily for us, his father, Hugo Perdomo, who instilled this work ethic in Carlos, was able to pick up where he left off. Hugo fermented the mucilage in barrels for 100 hours. The beans were washed, floated, and separated from lesser quality beans. Finally, the coffee was dried slowly on a covered patio for 35 days. Cosecha Traders is committed to creating lasting direct relationships between smallholder farmers and specialty roasters in the USA. It is for this reason that we are delighted to offer Coffea Roasterie the Perdomo family’s coffee for the second consecutive year! When he speaks about what he does best, he remembers his father and grandparents, who were also coffee farmers. Yebirson roasts, cups, and brews his coffee, which is in line with a new trend in youth coffee farmers who are quickly learning about specialty coffee. “At first, many of my friends discouraged me from producing specialty coffee, but now I feel like I scored a last-minute goal!” says Yebirson. He surprised himself and us as well with his quality. Now, he works with other youth to teach them about coffee, helping them improve their quality, so they don’t leave their farms. <image:caption>It is difficult for Aldemar to think back to a specific moment when he began coffee farming. One gets the impression that he does not know that any other crop exists. After all, coffee has been the dominant agricultural product in Inzá for decades. Producers often use dried parchment as currency to purchase foodstuffs and farming equipment in town. Aldemar is a fifth-generation coffee farmer who learned how to process coffee from his grandfather. Like many producers in Inzá, Aldemar traveled to Huila to work on coffee farms during the harvests. “I brought knowledge home,” says Aldemar. He remembers climbing ladders made of bamboo to pick coffee cherries. Sometimes he would fall off the ladder after picking a bag full of coffee cherries. As they spilled down the mountainside, he would pick them up, fill his bag, and climb back up the tree. “When you do things with love and goodwill, things work out for you,” says Aldemar. Cosecha Traders is honored to make Aldemar’s micro-lot available to specialty coffee roasters in the USA for the first time. <image:caption>Many children dream of becoming an astronaut, a firefighter, or doctor, but when Jose Eusebio was a boy, he dreamed of becoming a coffee farmer. His father served as an early inspiration for him as he taught him to pick and process coffee cherries on the family farm. “As one grows up, it is easy to get distracted in life doing something else, but I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do,” says José Eusebio. As an adult, Jose Eusebio worked picking coffee cherries, processing, and fertilizing coffee on other farms, eventually saving enough money to purchase Las Mercedes, a farm neighboring where he grew up. With an altitude of 1,850 MASL, the farm has an ideal climate for growing and processing specialty coffee. Due mainly to a forest reserve covering a portion of the property, the air is fresh, the landscape is verdant, and the ecosystem is teeming with colorful birds. “Coffee is the most important crop for us, but it is even more meaningful because my father taught me everything I know,” explains José Eusebio. As a smallholder farmer, he notes how challenging it can be to recover costs from one harvest to the next due to the low prices paid for coffee. However, he sees an opportunity to gain higher prices for the coffee he produces, leading to more stability and improvements. “We feel that specialty buyers, like Cosecha Traders, appreciate our hard work,” says Jose Eusebio. Jose Eusebio also grows crops like plantain, yucca, and green peas for his consumption and is looking into farming other crops to supplement coffee during the non-harvest seasons. His heart is undoubtedly into producing the best specialty coffee possible and continuing his family tradition. His father is a teacher at the community school and has implemented coffee growing projects with his students. It was there where Francisco planted his first coffee plant. Although his entire family worked in the fields, Francisco decided to enroll in culinary school in Cali and later worked in Medellin. He was away from home for a long time, far from the farm and his family. When his mother suffered an illness, he returned home and re-connected with his interest in agroecological processes and growing food without chemicals. As Francisco began to work with coffee, he became more inclined to remain in the countryside on his farm. He studied and applied all the knowledge he gained on the farm. His young mentality led him to innovate and take risks. Francisco believes a coffee farmer must have an open mind and be perseverant. Today, Francisco dreams of improving every aspect of his farm and coffee. As a result, he has not attempted to apply his knowledge to farming a different crop because "it would distract my attention from my coffee trees,” says Jaime. For Jaime, the key to producing great coffee is in fertilization and cleanliness. However, after speaking with him, we believe his secret may be resourcefulness and adaptability. Jaime has made due over the years without a suitable drying bed on his farm. He alternates between canvases and on the roof of his home to dry the parchment. Our goal before the next harvest is to help him build a proper drying bed. Although he has spent a lifetime farming coffee, Jaime has plans to keep learning about coffee production. He perceives himself as an entrepreneur, approaching his farm as a business. “I see myself working until I no longer have strength, and want to teach my children how to farm so they can inherit my knowledge,” says Jaime. Don Pablo doesn't have memories of coffee farming with his family at an early age, like most producers. In fact, he suffered the loss of his parents when he was 2 years old. When he was 10, he moved to Huila to work on coffee farms picking and processing coffee cherries. He moved back to Inzá, where he was born, and lived in the home his parents left him when they passed; farming coffee the way he learned to do throughout his life, and where he has lived for the last 40 years. He possesses the stoicism of other Nasa indigenous peoples. He is straightforward and concise when he speaks. His answers carry in them the weight of wisdom and honesty that one finds often, so far away from the busy lights of the big city. Don Pablo perceives himself as a fighter, who has suffered in life, but has learned that coffee gave him a helping hand when he most needed it. “I am an older man, but I will keep farming coffee until I can't anymore,” says Don Pablo. The lot represents the first cherries of his renewed lots, and luckily for our partner roasters, there will be more to offer in the future. Isidro gives the utmost importance to protecting his farm’s ecosystem by using little or no chemicals to grow his coffee. He protects water sources and works with neighbors so that they do the same. “One of the most important things God has given me is the land I work on,” says Isidro. He mentions that many colorful birds bless his farm, which are healthy for his crop. He enjoys it when roasters and buyers visit his farm to see how he processes his coffee. When asked what the most challenging aspect of processing specialty coffee is, Isidro says, “Coffee is already special. It’s the farmers that make it outstanding.” Department: Huila Altitude: 1750 MASL Varietals: F6, Castillo, and Cenicafe 1 Process: Semi-washed Shade Trees: Guamo, cachimbo, citrus trees, guava, chirimoya, mango, and sugar cane</image:caption>

      <image:title>Microlots - Adelmo - Adelmo</image:title>
<image:caption>Adelmo remembers his father with admiration. He has memories of picking coffee with him and his brothers on the family farm in Inzá. His father, who dedicated his life to farming coffee and his sons, raised Adelmo and his brothers by working on farms as a picker. His father later emulated practices he learned as a picker and passed those learnings onto Adelmo and his brothers for their farm. At 12 years old, Adelmo traveled to La Plata (Huila) with his brothers to work as a coffee picker. He quickly learned that working on the family farm was going to bring him a better living. However, with such low prices for coffee, illicit crops became an attractive alternative for many farmers. Many of Adelmo’s neighbors, lured by higher and more frequent payments, attempted to persuade him to grow illicit crops. The community changed, and the culture of illegality permeated its social fabric. Adelmo noticed this and began to advocate for coffee production. After all, coffee has been produced in his town by smallholder farmers for generations. “Some listened to me when I told them that we should keep farming coffee, and many more followed my example,” says Adelmo. Adelmo still uses the processing techniques his father taught him. He claims that while many farmers pick up fallen fruit, the secret is to leave them on the ground to fertilize the soil. Without a doubt, his techniques are working. Two years ago, Adelmo’s coffee placed third in a local contest, reaffirming his methods to produce high-quality specialty coffee. <image:caption>When the travel restrictions hit last year due to the pandemic, Carlos, who we had worked with the year prior, found himself in the Netherlands, waiting to travel back to Colombia and process his coffee. Finally back, Carlos was able to produce the lot we’re offering today. Now 20 years old, Carlos is equally as hard-working, disciplined, organized, and mature. Carlos is a fifth-generation coffee farmer who produces, transports, roasts, cups, and brews his coffee. These are all skills he learned while he worked as the warehouse and lab manager for a youth-producer association that promotes specialty coffee. “Coffee represents my family’s life, my great-grandparents’ lives, it is what has given us everything,” says Carlos. Since he was 12, he would transport his family’s harvest to town in his father’s truck. Carlos would also drive the truck, which served as a second source of income for his family, shipping produce to different towns in Western Huila. It is most likely for this reason that Carlos skillfully navigates treacherous roads in his trusty Montero with an ear-to-ear grin. “My parents taught me to work early on so I can make something of myself,” says Carlos, who has plans of studying Economics in France. This micro-lot represents a portion of Carlos’s family farm. In total, they have 55,000 coffee trees composed of Yellow Colombia and Yellow Bourbon varietals. To produce the cup, he used an anaerobic fermentation process which is divided in two stages. First, the coffee cherries were fermented in bags for 24 hours, and second, the de-pulped beans were fermented in the mucilage for 56 hours. The beans were then selected using a washed process, which floated and separated lesser quality beans from the best ones. Finally, the coffee dried on a covered patio for 30 days. When it was fully dry, the parchment was packed in GrainPro bags. Carlos says, “Our family history helps us produce the quality we have, but also motivates us to improve our quality because it means we are improving our quality of life too.” Department: Huila Varietal: Yellow Colombia and Yellow Bourbon Altitude: 1450 MASL Process: Washed double fermentation Shade Trees: Plantain, guamo, and tangerine, orange, and lemon Other Crops: Plantain and yucca</image:caption>

The training she received gave Maria Elita another perspective on managing her farm by using better techniques that lead to social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Maria Elita’s husband and children work on her farm, and during the harvest, everyone chips in and carries their respective workloads to process the farm’s coffee. Four years ago, they began working with a local association that helped her family to develop high-quality coffees. They learned about several processing methods, which included controlled fermentation, which is how she processed this beautifully delicate semi-washed coffee. She is passionate about her lifestyle on a coffee farm and embraces the cuisine and culture of the coffee-producing region in Huila. Further, Maria Elita is passionate about processing specialty coffee and tries daily to improve her methods and techniques in fermentation and drying. She sees specialty coffee ask the means to become a self-sustainable coffee farmer. <image:caption>Flor has produced coffee since she was a child. Like many coffee-growing families, picking and processing coffee was a family affair during the harvest. For years, her family farmed commercial-grade coffee, selling it for low prices in town. Now, she works alongside her husband to produce coffees that have competed in the Cup of Excellence. Her journey into specialty coffee production is the result of curiosity and faith. “We knew that we had good coffee because we had tasted it in the cupping lab, but we did not know what part of our farm it came from,” says Flor. Her husband, a Q Grader in a nearby producers' association, cupped each lot independently, resulting in a tedious yet worthwhile effort. Although a blessing. Flor believes that experience adds to the advantages her farm possesses. “Our coffee is special due to the microclimate, soil, varietals, but our experience is what makes our coffee stand out,” affirms Flor. As a woman coffee farmer, Flor is unphased by any challenges she finds on her journey. “Being a woman doesn't change anything about how I grow coffee,” Flor says, “I do this because it makes me happy.” Flor dreams of being recognized within Colombia and abroad for producing excellent coffee. She and her husband are constantly learning and innovating on the farm. Gradually, they have invested in infrastructure and soil quality, which is fundamental to producing high-quality coffee. By doing this, Fernando completed studies as a lawyer and as an agribusiness technician simultaneously. As a coffee farmer, he has raised his son who, despite being 12 years old, knows how to appreciate a good cup of coffee. Fernando tells us that he and his son often drink his Gesha coffee, only sold in Japan, for breakfast. One day, he brewed a blend of varietals from his farm and offered it to his son whose reaction was “What did you do to the coffee, Dad?” For Fernando, coffee is his passion and his life. From a very young age, he began to learn about coffee farming. His parents instilled a strong work ethic and still use many of the lessons they taught him about the crop. In 2007, when Marco faced a shortage in coffee production, he chose to process specialty for the first time. This marked the beginning of what has since become a journey into the world of exotic coffee varietals and experimental processes. Marco also grows and sells plantains to provide a secondary income for his family. For Marco, discipline has helped him adapt to ever-changing prices. Although everything he knows is self-taught, Marco dreams of receiving much more training and improving his farm's infrastructure. Marco is a model coffee farmer in his region, who despite having felt pressure to grow illicit crops, has placed blind faith in specialty coffee as a way to look toward a brighter future.
